The best of the DIRECTV primetime lineup

If they started within BC on TV’s 6pm-10pm primetime, Michael Fassbender stunningly good as Steve Jobs BEST FILM OF THE DAY (5.25pm Max) or Leslie Nielsen’s very silly and very funny slapstick comedy (The Naked Gun, 5.50pm TCM) would have been in contention. The excellent Sally Wainwright-written English police drama Happy Valley continues at 7pm on the DIRECTV channel.

Today’s Number One Film:

Picture courtesy Yesmovies.comFinal Destination 2. 7.34pm HBO Plus. Watch this if you liked The Butterfly Effect, Friday 13th or any of the other Final Destination movies.

Once you can get past the irony of the title (a part two to a film called Final Destination), the irony of the approach (people are put to hideous deaths in a lovingly professional way) and the sheer idiocy of the premise (capital-D Death must claw back the cadavers he would have had, had a group of people not avoided lower-case-d death in a car accident), this is modern filmmaking at its best and amounts to great entertainment - and yet another of those American things which convince the Taliban that they’re right about the decadent West. Until the 3D FD5, this movie was by far the best version, with the first film’s success bringing a far bigger budget and, ergo, far more spectacularly contrived deaths of innocent teenagers, while the very thin idea hadn’t yet been stretched past elasticity. Gruesomely gorgeous. Directed by David R Ellis/ 2003/ USA-Canada/ Splatter Horror-Thriller/ 90’/ R for disturbing strong violent/gruesome accidents, language, drug content and some nudity.
