*Unfriended, 6.05pm HBO Plus. Watch this if you liked V/H/S, Oculus or The Cabin in the Woods. There’s nothing new under the sun, true, but Facebook and Skype haven’t been around for as long as Shakespeare and the great success of Levan “Leo” Gabriadze’s film of Nelson Greaves’ hugely inventive screenplay is that it turns humdrum areas with which modern audiences are overly familiar – the computer desktop, the Facebook and Skype interfaces – and warps them to tell a terrific – and, at times, genuinely chilling – horror it would be hard not to call “new”. Almost every second of runtime is set on a computer screen, with all five or six human actors never looking one another in the face, just at their Skype camera images. It works. It’s not for anyone who wants their horror in a nice, orderly, linear presentation perhaps but, for the cinefile and horror aficionado, it’s a film that is both entertaining and important; indeed, it may be a greater critical than commercial success. Directed byLevan Gabriadze/ 2015/ USA/ Horror-Thriller/ 83 mins/ R for pervasive language, violent content, some sexuality and drug and alcohol use, all involving teens.

The Breakfast Club, The 9pm Stun. Watch this if you liked The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Fast Times at Ridgemont High or Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Probably the late John Hughes best and certainly his most enduring film, even the idea for the Breakfast Club was as good as the one for the Canterbury Tales: a group of misfits at an American high school spend a Saturday together in detention and get to know one another. You could criticize it for its white America-ness – and it’s white American in spades, as it were – as many critics still do, or you could relax and enjoy one of the most solid youth films ever shot in North America. The Mean Creeks, Easy A’s and Junos of today stand firmly on its shoulders. Directed by John Hughes/ 1985/ Comedy-Drama/ USA/ 97 mins/ R.

*Keanu, 9.05pm MaxPrime. Watch this if you liked Nine Lives, Pineapple Express or the TV comedy series Key & Peele. Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele might be the funniest people in the world under age 40. Their combination of off-the-wall humour and scathing self-deprecation may also be the closest American comedy has ever got to its British sibling. What’s certain is that their first feature film uses all the strengths of their TV show as a springboard into an outrageous action comedy. And it stars a cat in a lead role, as the kitten every gangster wants. Hilarious, tense and even touching in all the right parts, it’s a real treat. Directed by Peter Atencio/ 2016/ USA/ Action-Comedy / 100 mins/ Rated R for violence, language throughout, drug use and sexuality/nudity.
