A Trifecta of What’s Best on the Box for Sunday 5 August 2018

This is the very last week today’s number one film will screen in Trinidad, as good as it is, so you should hustle along to see it on the big screen asap; you will NEVER AGAIN get the chance to see it on the big screen, the way all good films should be.

Today’s Number One Film:

Blindspotting, 7.15pm & 9.30pm MovieTowne Port of Spain. Watch this if you liked Do the Right Thing, Happiness or the Donald Glover TV series Atlanta. Carlos Lopez Estrada’s first feature tries to be all things to all men – inner city crime flick, buddy movie, romantic comedy, ‘hood flick, serious social critique, even hip hop musical – and ends up being most things for most men (or at least those who can distinguish between tongue-in-cheek and fist-in-face).Because it sets out to do so very much in its 95-minute runtime, it necessarily spreads itself thin at moments. But it still remains a clever, very funny, deeply touching and remarkably emotionally honest film that remains, throughout, highly entertaining. No one who has ever expressed an opinion on the N-word should miss it.A rewarding trip to MovieTowne for a film that may start a cult. Directed by Carlos Lopez Estrada/ 2018/ USA/ Comedy-Crime-Drama/ 95 mins/ Rated R for language throughout, some brutal violence, sexual reference and drug use.

Also watch:

Inception (plus bonus material), 2.02pm HBO Signature BEST FILM OF THE DAY. Watch this if you liked Shutter Island, The Matrix or Pan’s Labyrinth. With Best Cinematography, Best Sound Editing & Mixing Oscars and Best Director, Screenplay, Music, Special Effects & Best Sci-Fi Film Saturns, the most imaginative American film since Adaptation manages to mix visceral, pulse-racing action & tension with real cerebral satisfaction. Even if you don’t understand it – and, once you pay attention, you will, and will love it – the action and effects alone could blow your mind. Simply excellent. Perhaps the best American film made so far this century (even if by a Brit director). Directed by Christopher Nolan/ 2010/ UK-USA / Action-Sci-fi-Thriller/ 148 mins/ PG-13 for sequences of violence and action throughout.

The Usual Suspects, The 3.25pm Fox Classics OTHER BEST FILM OF THE DAY. Watch this if liked The Sixth Sense, Unknown or The Magician of Lupin. One of the best thrillers ever made, this extremely clever whodunit featuring a genuinely stellar cast – Gabriel Byrne, Benicio Del Toro, Kevin “Now Disgraced” Spacey, Kevin Pollak, Chazz Palminteri (and a Baldwin) – has more twists than a family pot of spaghetti. Any thinking person lucky enough never to have seen it – or, put another way, “unlucky enough to have missed it on the big screen” – ought to love a watertight heist-gone-wrong script with riveting performances from an all-star cast and the best surprise ending in American cinema between Citizen Kane and The Sixth Sense. A two-bag-of-popcorn, don’t-look-away treat. Keyser Soze will make you jump. Directed by Bryan Singer/ 1994/ Germany-USA/ Mystery-Thriller/ 106 mins/ Rated R for violence and substantial strong language.
