The best of the DIRECTV primetime lineup

It starts outside of BC on TV’s 6pm-10pm primetime but, if you can catch it, Airplane II: The Sequel BEST FILM OF THE DAY (4.30pm TCM) remains hilarious 35 years on; the Western in the “Just Nosed Out” section is for cinefiles only, probably, the kind of viewer who’d get a kick out of just noticing that Gregory Peck, Omar Sharif and Telly Savalas were all in it.

Today’s Number One Film:

Picture courtesy Flickering MythThe Hunger Games Uncut, 9pm HBO Plus. Watch this if you liked Lord of the Flies, Battle Royale or Over the Edge. The source novels were probably the most successful young-adult book series aimed at females since Louisa May Alcott had Little Women turn into Young Wives in the late 19th Century. The Hunger Games trilogy made for reading as thrilling as, say, the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its sequels. For parents who want to see what all the fuss is about, the first film, though not nearly as good as the first book, explains that your daughters aren’t as foolish as they were when they raved over, say, the Twilight series. The special effects are great but the real star of the show is the excellent Jennifer Lawrence, who took our breath away in Winter’s Bone and brought it back with a gasp in Silver Linings Playbook. It’s almost persnickety to point out the plot is stolen from the Japanese cult classic, Battle Royale. The “uncut” version adds only eight minutes and is in no danger of being overlong, like The Mockingjay. Directed by Gary Ross/ 2012/ USA/ Sci-fi-Adventure-Thriller/ 150 mins/ PG-13 for intense violent thematic material and disturbing images)
